HANDRITIN HEIM! On this day in 1971, the Danish warship Vædderen brought three modest packages to the harbour in Reykjavík, wrapped up in brown paper. Inside were two of the most important artefacts of medieval Icelandic culture. The two largest parcels contained the magnificent and ornately illuminated Flateyjarbók, a collection of primarily konungasögur (kings’ sagas) compiled in the late fourteenth century. The third, measuring only eight inches by five inches, contained the humble-looking Konungsbók. This thirteenth-century codex contains the earliest and most historically significant attestation of the twenty-nine Eddic poems that are commonly referred to as the Poetic Edda. These poems represent one of the main sources for Scandinavian and broader Germanic pre-Christian myth and legend.
